“The richness of the Eastern Sierra Pine years after it is sawed into lumber makes Bodie glow with a warmth seldom seen elsewhere. This particular pine has a high concentration of tannin and pitch which yellows with age. Add to this is the cold dry winters which blankets Bodie in snow and ice for months, preserving the woods for years. The interiors of the buildings often seem as if the inhabitants left in a hurry, and in truth they did. Fire, disease and collapse from heavy snow falls caused the population to leave taking only what they could carry. Because life in Bodie was so hard, the escapees seldom returned. Sometimes because they did not survive the trek out. Being a mining town also gave it a transient nature. When the gold ran out or there was drop in the price, most of the inhabitants moved on. In spite of this they did think to build a school and even bring electricity to town. A power plant at Lundy Lake generated the electricity but the first lines headed towards Bodie were built in the wrong direction, and because at first they did not think electricity could go around corners, reaching town was delayed until the discovery was made.
Bodie had a church, Fire Station, General Store (which is still stocked), livery stable, hotels, lodge hall, barber and beauty shop, mortuary and the gold mine that was the only reason for the town’s existence. Today it is a California State Park and is managed in such a way as to suspend decay but not restore. Occasionally a roof is repaired or replaced or a glass pane is replaced, but little else. Well worth the trip to see. ”
